The University of Texas Department of Theatre and Dance Announces the 2013 Cohen New Works Festival

The Cohen New Works Festival presented by the University Co-op is proud to announce programming for the 2013 Festival, March 25 - 29. This highly anticipated Festival, produced by The University of Texas at Austin Department of Theatre and Dance, comprises more than 35 theater, music, dance, installations, multimedia, and site-specific new works by emerging artists from the university and Austin communities.

With an emphasis on original work, an infrastructure supported and led by students, and free admission to the public, the biennial Festival is the largest collegiate event of its kind in the nation. Performances, exhibits and guest artist panels run throughout each day at sites in and around the F. Loren Winship Drama Building on The University of Texas campus.

SAMPLING OF EVENTS FROM THE COHEN NEW WORKS FESTIVAL ROSTER

Colossal
A Large Spectacle Multi-Medium Performance, March 25-28 at Anna Hiss Gymnasium

Colossal is an epic theatrical event. Featuring a twenty-person ensemble, dancing, and a drum corps, Colossal centers on a University of Texas football player, struggling to move forward in the wake of a catastrophic spinal injury.

In hopes of honoring three different communities (football, dance and the disabled community) Colossal is both a celebration and critical examination of our nation's most popular form of theater - football.

Almost Invincible
An Enthralling Site-Specific Work, March 25-28 at the University of Texas Tower

A musical theatre collaboration piece, Almost Invincible is a live-action graphic novel about a hero and villain in a small American city. Animated video projection will be used to bring this graphic novel to life through scenic elements and comic cell art.

The Women of Juarez
An Alternative Form of Untold Stories, March 25-28 at the B. Iden Payne Theatre

Before the war on drugs took precedence in our border country of Mexico, Ciudad Juarez had a bigger problem. Told through an ensemble of Latina women, The Women of Juarez explores the ways in which the stories of the women of Juarez - the missing and the lost; the murdered and the ones left behind - are honored and told in unconventional and untraditional ways.

Times Two: A Public Display of Love Desire
A Dynamic Dance Performance, March 26 - 27 and 29 at the Oscar G. Brockett Theatre

Choreographed as a male-partnered performance, Times Two: A Public Display of Love and Desire is a contemporary dance piece that explores the universal yet intricate concept of love. Challenging dance norms associated with partner dancing, this pas de deux utilizes dance as a social instrument for initiating dialogue and provoking conversations surrounding traditional forms of dance, as well as non-traditional forms of love.

LΛMBDΛ
An Interactive Installation Project, March 25-29 at the Winship Drama Building Studio 2.138

LΛMBDΛ is an installation accompanied with a physically electric performance, blurring the lines between theater and science. An investigation of astronomical phenomena involving light, project lead Ryan Andrus shares "LΛMBDΛ will try to expand our perception of what light is and what it can tell us about the history, current state, and future of our universe."

AND MANY MORE!
Faculty Producer of the Cohen New Works Festival presented by the University Co-op Kirk Lynn says, "The Festival acts as a snapshot of where the American Theater is at in the mind of the student body, and we think where the American Theater itself will be in the next ten years."
